Dental Crowns and Bridges Calgary SE

Differences between dental crowns and bridges

porcelain dental crown
Dental crowns and bridges both serve the purpose of giving you a full, healthy and functional smile. Crowns are a porcelain shell

Crowns help support existing teeth and are often used to help:
  • Correct broken, chipped, misshapen or decaying teeth
  • Prevent damage from occurring to brittle teeth
  • Cover tooth discolouration to whiten your smile
  • Provide greater oral structure and shape
  • Boost self-esteem due to insecurity about your smile
Bridges are often used to help:
  • Replace missing teeth
  • Prevent jaw bone loss
  • Stop facial sagging due to missing teeth
  • Prevent other teeth from shifting into empty sockets
  • Maintain facial structure and self-confidence
Dental bridges include crowns. These dental crowns seal over-top of the teeth on either side of a gap where a tooth once was. The middle section of the bridge includes replacement teeth that rest in the empty section of gums.

What is better: a dental crown or a bridge?

dental bridge
Dental crowns and bridges each serve a distinct purpose for separate dental needs with the shared goal of helping you look and feel your best.

They both use prosthetic devices to help you achieve the smile you want and deserve to have.

Traditionally, dental crowns are better used to treat teeth still rooted into your gums. They act as a cap to restore a tooth’s health, strength and appearance.

Your dentist may suggest a crown when you’ve fractured a tooth, have intense tooth decay, or have a misshaped, missized tooth that interferes with the health of your bite alignment.

Dental bridges are used to replace teeth that are no longer rooted in your mouth — teeth that have been pulled due to excessive damage, decay, etc.

A dental bridge is often suggested as a way to maintain your jaw bone health, your facial features, the strength of your bite and the health of your teeth surrounding an empty socket.

How do dental crowns and bridges work?

dental crowns and bridges calgary se

Dental crowns and bridges can make a smile that has missing or damaged teeth look and act normal again. These dental treatments restore your teeth’s natural look and strengthen their function. They can help keep your teeth healthy and bright.

Dental crowns can help strengthen a damaged tooth as well as fix its appearance, especially in regard to alignment and shape. Dental bridges, on the other hand, literally “bridge” the gap between two teeth (where teeth may be missing). Bridges also stop the remaining teeth from moving into the empty spaces. This, in turn, can prevent tooth decays, misaligned bite, gum disease, or TMJ (jaw joint) disorders.

Dental crowns are caps that cover the entire tooth. They provide structure and shape. Dental bridges replace missing teeth. Before you are fitted for crowns or bridges, the teeth they will fit over must be reduced in size. After this is completed, a digital impression of the reduced teeth will be made so the new crown or bridge fits perfectly. These types of restorative dentistry are permanently cemented to your teeth.

Dental crowns can also be created for your in a single appointment. Ask us!

Do you need crowns to get a bridge?

A dental bridge is a device that includes crowns. These crowns fasten on top of your teeth on opposite sides of where you’re missing a tooth.

The installation of these crowns usually occurs at the same time as the installation of the replacement teeth bridging the empty space in your gums to your other teeth.

You don’t often need crowns prior to getting a dental bridge. Crowns are not a requirement before having a bridge device installed as crowns come with the bridge itself.

How long does a crown bridge last?

Just like real teeth, your dental crowns and bridges need to be brushed, flossed and taken care of as part of your daily routine. Professional cleanings and regular dental visits are also key to keeping your crowns and bridges in great condition.

With the proper time and care, dental crowns and bridges can last for up to 10 years or longer. This is largely dependent on their maintenance.

Consistently eating hard foods and habits like chewing ice can be really rough on dental crowns or bridges. It’s key to be self-aware of the stress that you place onto them to give them greater longevity.

Your dentist will show you ways to clean and preserve your dental crown and/or bridge for as long as possible!
