Sedation at Outdoor Dental

There are many reasons your dentist may use sedation. Whether for painless dental treatments or to reduce anxiety, sedation is an effective tool in dentistry. It’s important to learn about the differences in sedation techniques to discuss with your dentist what’s right for you.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Common in family dental clinics, nitrous oxide sedation can help make dental procedures comfortable. Sometimes referred to as “laughing gas,” a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen gets delivered through a small mask over the nose. This medication helps reduce discomfort and stress. Nitrous oxide sedation is often associated with a euphoric sensation. The patient is awake and responsive. The effects diminish immediately after removing the mask.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves medicine that’s taken by mouth. It can be swallowed as a pill or dissolved under the tongue. Oral sedation can reduce anxiety by a significant amount and improve the dental experience. Oral sedation can give an “amnesic” effect where the patient may not remember parts or the whole procedure.

Duration of the effect varies with dosage. Your dentist will discuss the right medication and dosage for you.

IV Sedation

During an IV sedation, medication is administered through an IV (intravenous) line. This allows the dentist to have immediate and complete control of the strength and delivery of the medication. IV sedation is also called “deep conscious sedation,” and can reduce anxiety and discomfort.
