QUIZ – Do You Have Sleep Apnea?

Is Snoring Always a Sign of Sleep Apnea?

Snoring is a potential sign of sleep apnea, but it doesn’t always disrupt sleep—at least, not for the person snoring. It’s when snoring is combined with other symptoms that it starts to be a sign of sleep apnea.

Other signs of sleep apnea can include:

  • Gasping for air
  • Morning dry mouth
  • Morning headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating

What Are the Different Types of Sleep Apnea?

There are 3 types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, and complex sleep apnea syndrome. Each type of sleep apnea is associated with continuous breathing pauses, called apneic events. As many as 20-30 apneic events may occur in a single night.

At Outdoor Dental, we can screen for obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Jay Patel can review your results and help you understand your options for treatment, including the benefit of certain oral appliances.

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when air can’t flow into or out of the nose and mouth while breathing efforts continue. Blocked airflow in the nose or mouth may be caused by an individual’s soft palate closing part of their airway, which may be caused by other health factors.

Central sleep apnea occurs when a person’s brain fails to send signals to their muscles to start breathing. This form of sleep apnea is generally less common than obstructive sleep apnea.

Complex sleep apnea syndrome can be considered a combination of both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. It is often diagnosed when a person continues to experience apneic events despite the use of positive airway pressure therapy techniques like using a CPAP machine.

What Are Your Options for Treating Sleep Apnea?

You may have heard of CPAP machines, but they are not your only option for living with sleep apnea.

CPAP machines can be inconvenient for travel or other situations where you may be sleeping away from home, and some people find them uncomfortable as well. An oral appliance may be an alternative that can meet your needs.

Following the diagnosis of sleep apnea, Dr. Patel can take 3D scans of your mouth to design a custom oral appliance for you to wear while you sleep. Oral devices can be more convenient than CPAP machines while still effectively treating snoring and sleep apnea.

Is Snoring Interrupting Your Sleep Quality?

When snoring brings you to Dr. Jay Patel at Outdoor Dental, he’ll first take the time to better understand your snoring to determine if you have sleep apnea. Sometimes, it is possible to treat snoring with a non-surgical treatment that makes use of the Solea laser.

Many people who snore experience palatal or mouth snoring, which is snoring caused by the vibration of the soft palate tissue that has relaxed over time. Solea Sleep is a laser treatment that can tighten tissue to open the airways and reduce the vibrations that cause snoring and disrupted sleep.

How Does Solea Sleep Work?

A Solea treatment can be completed in a quick, 5-minute session, with no post-treatment downtime. The laser used in Solea Sleep emits a unique wavelength that can effectively tightens the collagen fibers (proteins that repair and support cell structure) in the soft palate.

With the application of a topical anesthetic spray, most patients experience only minimal discomfort or a slight warming sensation during the procedure.

Experience the benefits of Solea Sleep and enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep without snoring.
