Managing TMJ Disorder with Outdoor Dental

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder is a condition that affects the joint that connects the jawbone to the skull. At Outdoor Dental, we understand the discomfort and pain that can come with TMJ disorder, and we are committed to providing effective management options for our patients in Calgary.

What Is TMJ Disorder?

TMJ disorder (TMD) can cause pain in the jaw joint and muscles that control jaw movement. It can also cause popping or clicking sounds when you open or close your mouth, as well as difficulty opening your mouth fully. In some cases, TMJ disorder can lead to headaches, earaches, and neck pain.

How Is TMJ Disorder Treated?

Our experienced dental team can provide effective management options to help alleviate TMJ disorder symptoms. We will begin with a thorough evaluation of your jaw joint and the surrounding muscles to determine the underlying cause of your TMD. Depending on your individual case, we may recommend one or more of the following treatments:

  • Oral splints or night guards to prevent teeth grinding and clenching
  • Micro occlusal adjustments to improve bite alignment
  • Physical therapy exercises to strengthen the jaw muscles
  • Pain management techniques, such as heat or ice therapy and over-the-counter pain medications
  • Lifestyle modifications, such as stress management and avoiding hard or chewy foods

In more severe cases, we may recommend surgery or other medical interventions to address TMJ disorder symptoms. However, our team will always prioritize conservative treatments first to minimize discomfort and provide effective relief.

How Can Micro Occlusal Adjustments Help TMD?

A micro occlusal adjustment or bite adjustment is a dental procedure that involves making minor modifications to the biting surface of the teeth.

At Outdoor Dental, we use a digital bite recording system, TekScan, to measure surface level, bite force, and bite stability. Then, using a grinding tool, we can gently reshape the teeth to enhance alignment.

This resurfacing helps distribute bite pressure evenly, preventing excessive force on specific teeth or one side of the mouth. The result is a more comfortable bite that reduces wear and tear on the teeth and jaw joints.
