YOUR FIRST DENTAL EXAM

1. GATHERING YOUR MEDICAL AND DENTAL INFORMATION:
On this first part of the exam, we will listen to your concerns and take note of any dental or health complications you may have. We will also be taking digital x-rays.
2. TEETH EXAM WITH DIGITAL X-RAYS:
We will be taking digital X-rays and photos to see that status of your oral health. X-rays will help to detect cavities, decaying teeth, and the conditions of your gums. They will also be instrumental to see the position of your teeth. Unlike film X-rays, digital X-rays emits less radiation and will allow us to zoom in the image. These capabilities of digital X-rays will help us explain abnormalities in your mouth.
3. ORAL CANCER SCREENING AND SOFT TISSUE EXAM:
During the oral screening, we will be focusing on your soft tissues. This include looking at your tongue, cheek, palette, and throat.
A quick and painless oral cancer screening will scan for pre-cancerous and cancerous tissues. Oral cancer can happen to anyone. Certain factors may put you at risk and identifying them early on is important. We do a visual screening to detect any abnormal tissue in your mouth. Pre-cancerous tissues, if caught early, will also allow for a much more effective prognosis.
4. TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT (TMJ) DYSFUNCTION EXAM:
Many Canadians suffer from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ or TMD). Symptoms of TMJ include pain in the chewing muscles, face, jaw, and neck. Limited movement and a stiff jaw are common with those afflicted with TMJ. At Outdoor Dental, neuromuscular dentistry treatments are available for patients suffering from TMJ.
5. SLEEP AND BREATHING ASSESSMENT:
Millions of people suffer from snoring and sleep apnea. We will ask you questions and look at your jaw position to determine if you are affected by sleep apnea and/or snoring. There are alternatives to CPAP machines that may help you improve your health, sleep, and personal life.
6. OCCLUSAL EXAM (BITE EXAM):
Your bite affects the position of your jaws and teeth. At times, bite adjustments are important towards treating headaches and redistributing your bite force.
7. PERIODONTAL EXAM (GUM EXAM):
Gum disease is one of the main causes of tooth loss, bleeding gums, and gum or bone shrinkage. Sensitive or bleeding gums may increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. This is due to your body’s vulnerability to plaque bacteria. A periodontal exam can show the health of your gums and establish preventive care.
8. TOOTH BY TOOTH EXAM:
In this part of the exam, we will be looking closely at each tooth and crowding concerns you may have. It’s important to understand that when you’re teeth is straight, they’re easier to maintain. You’ll also have healthier gums. To read more about orthodontics
